The Korean Intellectual Property Office’s trademark special investigative police announced on that they had referred a 38-year-old individual, to the prosecution for violating trademark laws by distributing counterfeit goods valued at 340 billion won (USD 249M), including luxury accessories.
The person is suspected of having sold more than 40,000 counterfeit products between January and April. The case unfolded following the discovery of a wholesale operation promoting counterfeit items on social media. After a two month investigation, authorities seized large quantities of fake goods from the person’s store located in Busan.
Among the confiscated items, 78 percent were counterfeit luxury accessories falsely branded with logos of well-known brands. An additional 20 percent consisted of character-themed goods infringing on trademarks of popular franchises. The remaining 2 percent were imitation fashion products mimicking brands.
Investigators revealed that the person manufactured the counterfeit luxury accessories and character themed items using high grade stainless steel typically used in surgical equipment. These products were then sold wholesale, with some being offered directly to consumers through the store.
The Director of the Industrial Property Protection Cooperation Division, emphasized the agency’s determination to take action, stating, “We will eradicate the distribution of counterfeit goods that threaten the genuine market.”
