By Tony Lugg, Chairman of TAPA APAC
Mr. Tony Lugg, Chairman of Transported Asset Protection Association Asia Pacific (TAPA APAC), delivered a captivating and insightful opening keynote at the SCRS Conference in Shanghai on 25th June, marking the beginning of the two-day event dedicated to exploring the intricacies of supply chain resilience and security. His address commenced by celebrating TAPA APAC’s recent accolade, the Dell Technologies Partner Excellence Award, which recognizes TAPA’s pivotal role in elevating global supply chain standards through strategic partnerships.
SCRS is the annual trademark conference of TAPA APAC which is hosted across the Asia Pacific region to discuss strategies, technologies, and practices aimed at fostering resilient and sustainable supply chains amidst a dynamic global landscape. This year, the event drew more than 250 industry professionals, thought leaders and partners in Shanghai.
Strategic Vision for Supply Chain Innovation and Resilience
Tony commenced by setting the stage with a reflection on the prevailing challenges in today’s global supply chain landscape. He emphasized the impact of geopolitical tensions and logistical complexities that have not only escalated costs but also necessitated increased inventory management across various sectors, illustrating the critical need for resilient supply chain strategies.
“Global brands faced challenges such as geopolitical issues, increased costs, and inventory pressures, which stressed not only the supply chain but also e-commerce,” said Tony. “We saw more manufacturing companies moving to Asia, especially Southeast Asia, which experienced growing demand. This meant that our members needed more than just freight security requirements; they also needed knowledge about resilience, risk assessment, and business continuity standards. TAPA continuously addressed these needs.”
Significance of China and the Imperative for Global Collaboration to Harness Its Potential
Turning to the evolving dynamics in Asian manufacturing, Tony underscored a noticeable uptick in demand from companies setting up operations across Southeast Asia. This surge, he explained, has amplified the expectations placed on TAPA APAC to deliver robust solutions that extend beyond traditional security measures. Highlighting the organization’s proactive stance, Tony detailed the recent introduction of new TAPA Standards such as the Risk Assessment Standard (RAS) and the upcoming Business Continuity Planning (BCP) Standard. These standards are designed not only to mitigate risks but also to enhance overall supply chain resilience in the face of emerging threats.
An integral part of Tony’s keynote was the recognition of TAPA TAPAC’s collaborative efforts with the Pudong government in China. He expressed gratitude for the partnership, which has significantly bolstered TAPA APAC’s operational capabilities in the region, facilitating smoother regulatory compliance and operational efficiency. This collaboration showcases TAPA APAC’s commitment to fostering strong relationships with government entities to ensure a conducive environment for its members’ supply chain operations.
Tony pivoted to highlight several strategic advancements and milestones achieved by TAPA APAC. These included the restructuring of membership frameworks to better cater to diverse organizational needs and the launch of innovative tools like the TAPA APAC Intelligence System (TIS). TIS has garnered positive feedback from global government agencies for its role in providing actionable insights that combat cargo crime and promote industry best practices.
Providing a glimpse into TAPA APAC’s growth trajectory, Tony shared impressive statistics, including a remarkable 27% increase in revenue and notable certifications for over 3,000 trucks and 800 sites. These milestones, he emphasized, signify TAPA APAC’s expanding influence and operational reach across the Asia Pacific region, positioning the organization as a key player in enhancing supply chain security standards.
TAPA APAC Charging the Lead for Resilient Supply Chains
Looking ahead, Tony highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at integrating cutting-edge technologies such as IoT and AI into TAPA APAC’s operational frameworks, ensuring members are equipped with advanced tools to navigate evolving security challenges effectively. Additionally, Tony highlighted the burgeoning role of autonomous vehicles in shaping the future of logistics and supply chain operations, stressing the need for proactive engagement and adaptation within the industry.
Tony extended heartfelt gratitude to all conference attendees and encouraged participants to leverage the conference as a platform for robust dialogue and knowledge exchange, aimed at collectively advancing global supply chain resilience and security standards.
