Bangladesh’s garment sector is facing a potential loss of up to USD 1 billion following a devastating fire that tore through the cargo complex of an airport. The blaze destroyed storage zones holding vast quantities of raw materials, finished garments, and product samples belonging to exporters.
The tragedy struck at a critical time when the country’s garment industry was preparing for its peak export season. “We have witnessed a devastating scene inside” stated in an interview. “The entire import section has been reduced to ashes,” he added, estimating losses could reach as high as USD 1 billion.
Firefighters and emergency officials worked tirelessly to assess the extent of the damage. Among the destroyed goods were “urgent air shipments,” including garments and product samples. It was emphasized the severe implications of losing these product samples, which play a key role in attracting international buyers and expanding export orders. “These samples are essential for securing new buyers and expanding orders. Losing them means our members may miss out on future opportunities” stated.
The cargo hub affected by the blaze is one of Bangladesh’s largest logistics centers for air shipments. Every day, around 200 to 250 factories send their products by air, showing the scale of the financial impact.
While the fire has been contained, the cause remains unknown. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what triggered the blaze.
