Police are conducting an active search for a telecommunications company manager accused of embezzling nearly 200 smartphones, worth about HK$2 million (USD 256,000), from a store in Wan Chai. The incident was reported by staff at the company’s branch on Johnston Road. According to sources, the company’s management carried out a system check on September 9 and found that 198 smartphone devices had been reserved at the Wan Chai branch for an unusually long period. When questioned, the manager, identified only by his surname claimed the phones had been set aside for customers and later sold the following evening. However, no sales records were found in the system.
The situation escalated when the company received a text message from the manager admitting to stealing the phones before disappearing. The case has been classified as theft and is now under investigation by the Wan Chai Police District’s Criminal Investigation Team.
