Lithium Battery Plant Fire in Taiwan, Prompts Shift in Production

A fire erupted at a lithium battery manufacturing facility in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, injuring 15 individuals, including three firefighters who sustained burn injuries. The fire originated in a warehouse that stored unfinished battery products, according to reports.

Thick smoke was seen billowing from the site, and Kaohsiung’s fire bureau received the emergency alert around 5 a.m., promptly deploying 46 rescue vehicles and 91 personnel, including firefighting robots. The blaze, which occurred near Kaohsiung’s airport, was brought largely under control without disrupting airport operations. The mayor has since ordered the immediate suspension of plant operations. Investigations into the cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage are ongoing.

In a statement released, the company announced that it would temporarily shift production capacity to its other facility to ensure continued shipment of high-end product shipments.

The company confirmed the fire had been largely extinguished. However, the scope of losses and compensations will be determined after a third party evaluation. The company is also fully cooperating with government investigations.

Despite the setback, the company reported that most clients have shown strong support and flexibility regarding delivery timelines. The company noted that the Kaohsiung plant had received significantly higher Q3 and Q4 orders compared to the first half of the year. While the other facility will prioritize basic order fulfillment for existing clients from August.
