Indonesian Police Foil Crude Oil Theft

Authorities have uncovered a crude oil theft operation involving three suspects who tapped into a trunk pipeline in Payakabung Village, North Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency, on Monday, June 9, at around 1:30 a.m. WIB.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Ogan Ilir Police, stated that the case was discovered following a report from a field security personnel, who noticed suspicious activity near the pipeline.

Acting swiftly, the team launched an investigation and by around 1:50 a.m., successfully apprehended three suspects.

“Upon inspection, it was found that the pipeline had been tampered with, and around 50.32 barrels of crude oil, valued at approximately Rp 51 million (USD 3,100), had been stolen.

Alongside the suspects, the police seized key pieces of evidence including a red truck equipped with a modified tank capable of holding about 8 tons of crude oil. Also confiscated were three 10-meter-long iron pipe blades, a 15-meter-long tube, and other tools used in the operation.

Several accomplices reportedly fled into the forest during the raid and are currently being pursued by police.

The case is being processed and dated June 9, 2025, with the suspects facing charges under Article 363 of the Indonesian Criminal Code, which addresses aggravated theft.

“This case reflects our commitment to taking decisive action against criminal acts that harm the state and society. We urge the public to immediately report any suspicious activities in their communities,” Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Ogan Ilir Police added.
