An explosion at a fireworks factory in central China has resulted in nine deaths and 26 injuries, according to reports from state media on Tuesday.
The incident took place just before 8:30 a.m. on Monday at a factory located in a village near the city of Changde in Hunan province, as reported. By 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities had confirmed nine fatalities and 26 injuries, with rescue operations still ongoing at the site.
Emergency teams have faced significant challenges, as the situation at the factory remains “complicated” and the risk of further explosions continues to complicate rescue efforts. The factory’s remote location in a mountainous region without access to a large water source has added to the difficulties encountered by first responders.
Despite these obstacles, rescue teams have been working tirelessly for over 20 hours, employing remote-controlled water cannons to combat the blaze.
The Ministry of Emergency Management has sent a team to supervise the response efforts in Hunan and is prioritizing an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and ensure accountability for those responsible.
