India and Japan have officially entered a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) to establish a robust semiconductor supply chain. This partnership encompasses both government-to-government and industry-to-industry collaboration.
The Minister of Communications and Information Technology expressed the significance of this collaboration, highlighting the importance of a resilient semiconductor supply chain. He noted that this agreement is in line with the Prime Minister of India’s recent visit to the United States, where several agreements were signed, and reflects India’s cooperation with other nations.
The minister of Communications and Information Technology further elaborated on the focus areas within this partnership, emphasizing semiconductor design, semiconductor manufacturing, equipment research, talent development, and overall strategies for enhancing supply chain resilience. By prioritizing these aspects, India and Japan aim to bolster their positions as key partners in ensuring a robust and secure semiconductor supply chain.
The two countries will establish an implementation organization dedicated to facilitating government-to-government and industry-to-industry collaborations as part of the collaboration. Minister of Communications and Information Technology emphasized the significance of this cooperation by including a semiconductor manufacturer in Japan, which will play a significant role in advancing the partnership. He mentioned that India and Japan will carefully evaluate all progress made in this collaboration at the ministerial level.
The semiconductor manufacturer comprises a consortium of renowned Japanese companies. This cooperation with the semiconductor manufacturer highlights the commitment to pursuing accelerated developments in the semiconductor industry.
This development is particularly noteworthy following reports of a domestic tech company venturing into semiconductor manufacturing. It signifies the growing recognition and involvement of Indian companies in the semiconductor space.
India is positioning itself as a pivotal player in the semiconductor industry and is actively encouraging global companies to establish manufacturing facilities in the country with enticing incentives.
